Columbus was nothing like how people say he was. He was a great hero. Through his bravery and determination, America came to be. He treated the natives with kindness and respect following Queen Isabella’s orders. The natives of Hispaniola, his first landing site, treated him kindly. They were known as the Taino people. I recently spoke with a man called Raphael Ortiz, an expert on Christopher Columbus and the Taino people. A descendant himself, he believes Columbus to be a hero as well. I enjoyed our conversation even though his historical accuracy was somewhat lacking.

Columbus also treated the settlers well, and his shipmates. The men were jealous of him because he was a foreigner. That’s why they falsely accused him of crimes like rape and murder. Columbus grew up in Genoa, Italy. The first captain he shipped with was Captain Errore, who would become his lifelong friend. He was fourteen at the time. He sailed from England to Ireland to Morocco with Captain Errore. After a fight with pirates on August 25, 1476 he was forced to jump overboard and swim to shore, where he settled in Lisbon.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
